Interview w/Nightmare of You's Brandon Reilly
Due to busy schedules, it took us a couple of weeks to get this interview done for you. In the end, turned out e-mail was the best option. Below is the interview we we're able to get with Nightmare of You's lead singer, Brandon Reilly.

You just got off the road with Alkaline Trio, how was that?
The tour went quite well. There were a few thousand people a night and for the
most part people were very open and enthusiastic about our set. The Alkaline
Trio and Saves the Day guys are such wonderful people. They made us feel right
at home.
The Norfolk, VA show was great. There were a lot of people there to see us. It
was very unexpected, especially in Virginia, which isn't one of our stronger
areas. Our new album, "Infomaniac" comes out August 4th. We tracked it during the months of January and February. The record ultimately was fully mixed and mastered before we hit the road with Alkaline Trio. Right now we are setting up the release, doing some press, and going out on a 6 week headlining tour of America in preparation for the release. |
What was the process like in creating the new album, did it start off lyrically or instrumentally?
Our music always starts off instrumentally, followed by vocal melodies, and ultimately lyrics last. Generally, I'll come up with the chord progressions for a song, Joe writes a lot of lead guitar and bass, Gavi started as the bass line, which Joe wrote. Goodnight Devil is a piece of music that Joe wrote. Lyrics came as an after-thought.
Who did you work with on the new album? Where did you record?
We recorded it at The Magic Shop in NYC with our friend, engineer/producer,
Brian Thorn.
Spin.com had an exclusive for I Think I'm Getting Older, what has the
feedback been like on it?
The feedback seemed to be great. Most people loved it and let us know that they
loved it. Of course there will always be people who can't wrap their head around
new songs and new records sounding different than the old material. We will
always make different records. We refuse to not grow and explore different
sounds. Otherwise it’d be artistically very stuffy.
I know you have a couple of weeks off before you hit the road again, what are
you doing with your time off?
I'm spending a lot of time reading, which I do all the time anyway. A lot of sitting in the parks, drinking vegetable juices. A lot of eating very well, which is borderline impossible on the road. We also started writing lightly for what will eventually be our 3rd album.
When you head back out, what are your must haves?
Coffee, occasional restaurant food, beer/wine, and hopefully on this trip, some
camping.
Has any fan ever done anything to stand out in your mind?
Well, there are about 5 fans who we all know well by this point, due to their
undying support and devotion to nightmare of you. I mean, I can't think of one
specific instance, as there have been so many nice things done for us. It's
always lovely to get cookies and brownies, books, and letters.
We thank you for your time, anything you'd like to say to your fans?
I know that getting music free is very easy and tempting now, but help out a poor indie band such as us by buying our new album "Infomaniac" on August 4th. If not that, then come out and see us play on this headlining tour in June/July/August. We promise a long set with new and old material.
Nightmare of You will be coming back to the Tampa area on July 23rd at the Crowbar in Y'bor City.
