Snoop Bowl VII - 2009

Day of Battle

The day had finally came that so many young football players had been waiting for, at 1 P.M., Snoop Bowl 2009 got underway at Gaither High School. The stadium began to fill around noon time, and a constant stream of cars came into the parking lot, causing traffic to back up on Dale Mabry Highway.

Before the kick off, and during the game, legendary DJ, DJ Skillz provided music to the crowd so at no point there was nothing to do. You could tell in the players faces that it was time to get dirty on the field. Before the kick off, two great male singers sang are national anthem, as both teams bowed their heads. It was then game time. As team captains walked to middle of the field for the coin toss, the Tampa Gator team followed behind their team, with helmets raised.

After two coin flops, it came up heads, and Snoop Dogg University deferred the ball, and decided it would receive in the second half. Teams took to their sides, and with the cheer of the crowd, kick off happened. The first score of the game came when SDU ran the ball in for a TD, and did not convert on their two point conversion. Several minutes later, SDU pinned the Tampa Bay Gators at their own one yard line, and was able to tackle the QB giving them a safety, and leading the game, 8-0.

Before half time the Gators scored what would be their only score for the game, and did not convert on their two point conversion either. At the half score was SDU 8 – TBG 6. During half time the crowd went into shock, as many stars appeared that no one realized was there. Among the celebs were boxer Winky Wright, Snoop’s Uncle Junebug, former NFL players Deion Sanders, Tyrone Keys, half time performer Sky, and many more former and current NFL players, including some of the Pittsburg Steelers team.

During half time, the marching band from California played, along with up and coming star Sky, who kept the crowd craving for more. With the half over, the teams returned, and finished off the game, final score, SDU – 14 – TPG 6. The home team did loose, but after the game when the teams met in the middle, coaches kept talking about how there were no losers on the field, and everyone is a winner. Snoop even picked out several players from the Tampa team and gave them official Snoop Dogg action figures. After a prayer, the teams went off to change, and go to dinner together.

Overall the game went by smoothly, but there was one key problem we must mention in this article. In our opinion, the security that was hired for the game, Angel Security Guards, as well as Snoops personal security were very abusive, mean, and overall did not know exactly what was going on or how to deal with the situation at hand.

When we first got to the venue, we were told by security that there was no parking left, and they did not care if we were with the media or not. Trying to explain there is a place for us to park, the security guard ignored us, and we drove to another entrance where we were let in right away with out a problem.

Also, during the game, members of Angel Security treated members of the media as we were part of the crowd, and tried to man handle several of us. Even during the team prayer, members of security were so ignorant to the fact a prayer was going on, they insisted on everyone getting off the field. It wasn’t until a coach from the Tampa team told them they needed to be quiet, and leave us alone that you no longer heard them trying to kick the group off, we will be posting video of this very soon.

Even more shocking, when young children were walking by, or trying to get to members of their family, security acted as if they were a threat, and “guarded” the celebrity to make sure the child could get no where close, when obviously there was no intent by the child to get there.

Even after the crowds were gone, when we went to Snoops team locker room, a member of his security staff threatened to have us removed, even though we were told to go to the locker room so we could get a football signed by the team. What shocked us even more was this security guard even disrespected one of the Tampa coaches wives, at which point she let him have a piece of her mind. After speaking with the coach for Snoops team, it was taken care of, and the ball was signed by the whole team.

Overall, minus the security glitches, which once again, in our opinion is the worst security staff we have even encountered. The game was very enjoyable, and was a moment that every single one of those players will remember. Next time this event goes on in the area though, we hope they look for a more reliable security agency, one such as Gator Guards who handles events everywhere from the Warped Tour, to State Theatre, Jannus Landing, and The Ritz.
