A Chat w/Tragic Orange
On September 6th at Bourbon Street Night Club in New Port Richey, FL, I had the distinct pleasure of listening and watching Tragic Orange a band out of Long Island, New York. They put on a truly amazing set and were equally amazing people. After the show, I had the opportunity to sit down with them and discuss their summer tour, their music, and various other topics.

Hi! I’m Marissa with Get In magazine and I’m here with Tragic Orange, whom have just played a gig at Bourbon Street in New Port Richey. My first question is, you guys have a pretty “out there” name. Where did you come up with your band name? Phil: Our name actually came from Christina’s drum set. In the catalog the name of the color is Tragic Orange. So we all looked at that name and we liked the sound of it. It kind of represents our sound of our music, our music has two sides to it. Tragic is more of the darker parts and Orange is the lighter fun parts. So I know that you guys just started your summer tour, how is that treating you so far? P: Good! James: Awesome! P: We’ve met a lot of nice people that let us stay at their houses and stuff, all the clubs have been good, especially Bourbon Street. It’s been great! J: Bourbon Street New Port Richey! (Holds up glass) |
So when you were describing your band name earlier, you were explaining how you have the dark side and the light side of your music, what influences do you have when writing your songs?
P: We all like bands like Tool and a Perfect Circle, James likes the Doors, I like the Doors, Vik doesn’t particularly like the Doors. Also a lot of the bands from the 90’s, like Alice in Chains, STP.
Vik: Anything that’s good music!
J: Justin Timberlake!
P: I listen to a lot of Beck and Ween. They’re really good musicians as well.
How would you describe your fan base, and is there anything you’d like to say to them right now?
J: You guys f****** rock.
V: We need more girls. We are open for business! We have 3 incredible (insert made up words for things) and that’s great!
And some guys for her!
J: Christina is not into girls! She’s not!

Your lyrics that you have written for your songs, are they true to life? Or are they made up stories. Or are they both? P: Pretty much all the lyrics are something that’s happened to me. Stories are all things that have happened. I write a lot metaphorical things that I throw out there. Kind of like aliens and alien abduction is a metaphor for drug addiction. What are your hobbies that have nothing to do with music at all? J: Sex, sex, sex, and sex. V: Drinking...fuck! P: You took all the good ones! Christina: I always liked soccer! I haven’t played in a long time. J: We’re into girls and rock and roll. Oh and just to…. J: Oh I like Golf! You like Golfing? J: Tiger woods. You want to see a swing? |
|
Sure!
(At this time James holds his cup in his mouth while stepping in front of the camera.)
J: Watch the arm. (Still in golf swing position, then throws the cup in the parking lot somewhere). Ready? Just like George Bush! (In his best George Bush voice) Alright watch this shot! (He then swings his invisible golf club and points at the camera) FOUR!!!

I know you guys have somewhat said it before, but what are some of your favorite artists? V: I really like Jack Johnson. P: I really like Beck and Ween. They’re two of my favorites that I like. They’re a lot different than what we do, but still. C: Right now? I like Killswitch Engage, and Bullet for my Valentine. J: Motley Crue, Kiss, Mudvayne, Disturbed, The Beatles…. V: There’s too many! We could be here for like 2 more hours, Portishead. Portishead is a great f****** band! J: Biggie Smalls! Well thank you very much for taking some time out for Get In magazine, you had a great show and good luck on the rest of your tour! V: We love you Get In Magazine! J: Rock on! V: Goodnight! |
