A Talk w/Relient K
At the St. Petersburg leg of the 2008 Warped Tour, I had a chance to talk to Jon Schneck and John Warne of Relient K. We talked about their experience at the Warped Tour, and what they are looking forward to in the future...

Can you introduce yourselves and tell us what you play in the band? Jon Schneck: I’m Jon Schneck of Reliant K and play guitar. John Warne: I’m Jon Warne and I play bass. Excellent; how has your new record been accepted while on the Warped Tour? JS: Our fans are digging every second of it. JW: I think there were four or five seconds the people could dig, but for the most part I think it’s been well received. JS: Yeah, we’re trying to get it under four or five seconds. JW: Yeah, anywhere in the two to three range would be an acceptable level. |
You guys came up with an awesome idea for fans to hunt through the web for special tracks recorded by the band. How did you come up with the idea and how has the fan reaction been to it?
JW: We don’t like to give anything away; we want you to work for it so we decided to do a scavenger hunt.
JS: John did a cool video for it as a clue.
JW: It was fun.
JS: There’s been some frustration expressed over not getting some of the clues but then someone else would give it away and then it makes everyone stay so it all works out.

What is your take on music as of now and where do you think it will go in the next five years? JW: I think the music produced is good, but as for the state of the industry, I don’t know, I can’t say. JS: It’ll be implanted in our heads eventually. On a microchip. What is your must need item that you take with you on the road to keep you sane? JW: The crazy pills. We take a couple of those everyday. JS: I could be generic and say my computer, but it’s probably true. JW: Yeah, that and a cell phone communication device. |
|
What’s the best part about being on the Warped Tour?
JW: Just being out here, playing shows and meeting all these fans and having a good time.
JS: Yeah, and seeing bands you’ve never heard of before and being impressed.
JW: Or unimpressed.
|
|
Haha, on that note, who are your favorite bands to tour with and why? JW: Um, on this tour or in general? Any tour... JW: I don’t think we ever had a really bad experience before. Maybe we have, I haven’t. You know, I think all the bands we tour with we get to know and like them all. JS: Yeah, for sure. JW: They’re all professional in their own way. JS: I like touring with Mae, toured with them a couple times. Switchfoot. |
How has gas prices affected you on this year’s tour?
JW: It just makes us angry, everyday, and every night.
JS: Just costs more, that’s about it.
JW: Yeah we actually had to do online auctions and sell off our personal items to provide gas for everyone.
JS: We’ve all been trying to lose weight as well to get the gas mileage up.
JW: Yeah, we’re only allowed to bring one suitcase out so that it wouldn’t way as much.
JS: That’s true.
JW: Haha, no it’s not.
